Draft Programme
We want to keep you in the
loop about this year's Hui at Onuku Marae, Akaroa, New Zealand
the weekend of 11-13 July 2008.
My friend Catherine McFedries
and I have been finalising the details for our stay at Onuku
Marae, and have pulled together a draft programme for the weekend
as well, which is attached.
We have had a couple of speakers
recently let us know that they are no longer able to attend,
so we have a few open slots in the programme at this stage. This
is good because we hope to shape the weekend once we all gather
together and work out what kaupapa we want to discuss. If you
have an issue or an idea or a project you would like to discuss
with us over the weekend, please let me know, and prepare something
to bring along. In fact, we hope that everyone will prepare some
thoughts at least, to share over the weekend! :-) Then there
will be additional sessions available alongside some of the current
ones, once we hear from you!
Our food will be collectively
designed (as in, rather than charging a per person amount for
food, we are asking people to bring something along from home
to contribute to our ingredients) and communally prepared, which
I hope everyone is happy with!
We need registrations from
people by the week before please, as the marae needs to know
definite numbers in advance. So if you are interested, please
email me to confirm you are coming before 4th July.
Please ring (07 578 6848 or
027 474 0286) or email me if you have any suggestions, questions
or concerns. Alternatively you can contact our local person Catherine, on 03 960
2624, 027 715
7933
Please feel free to forward
this information onto any other friends or whanau who may be
interested in attending our hui.
Kia tau te rangimarie o te
Atua ki a koutou na,
Jo Cameron

DETAILS FOR THOSE PLANNING
ON COMING
Please pack warm clothes (it
snows on them there hills!), sleeping bag/blankets, a sheet and
pillow case, towel and personal toiletries (ear plugs are a good
idea on a marae if you are a light sleeper!). It is traditional
for women to wear longer skirts and men to wear long pants during
a Powhiri, so please think of that.
----
The marae have advised us that
to cover their costs, each person needs to give $35-$40 for the
weekend. We also wish to give the local people a koha above
and beyond their costs, and to also contribute to petrol costs
of the local Cantabrians who are going to drive us over the hill,
so please consider that when working out how much cash you will
bring along. Thanks.
----
In terms of food, we intend
to self cater with food from our homes, gardens, and local supermarket
dumpsters. If you are able to bring along some food (whether
it be veges, cans of food, a breakfast cereal, a bottle of milk
or baking ingredients) please let Jo Cameron know. We will work
out a loose menu for our shared meals together, and then work
with whatever ingredients are brought along.
----
We will happily cook vegetarian
meals, and vegan and gluten-fee alternatives if you let us know
in advance what you need. We will share the cooking and dishwashing
and cleaning responsibilities amongst ourselves. If you are
a Christchurch-based dumpster diver, please go for a dive to
get us some kai! Some of us North Islanders will arrive before
Friday night and would love to come out with you.
